Wizz Air has launched a scheduled flight from Sármellék

After almost a decade and a half, a scheduled flight has been re-launched from Hévíz-Balaton Airport.

The Wizz Air flight connects Dortmund with Hévíz-Balaton Airport twice a week.

Zsófia Jakab, deputy director-general of marketing and communications of the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ), said that it is of utmost importance for MTÜ to strengthen German tourism in the Hévíz-Balaton region. Her comments were made at a press conference held Thursday on the occasion of the arrival of the first flight to the airport.

Hévíz is the second most important destination for German tourists arriving in Hungary after Budapest, she said.

MTÜ’s main task is to stimulate traffic through data-driven sector management and make Balaton one of the most visited regions as a four-season destination. Regional airports have recently become more valuable, which is why the new Sármellék flight is a priority, she added.

Bálint Nagy, state secretary at the Ministry of Construction and Investment and an MP for the region, said that this investment is important for Hévíz, Zalakaros, the Balaton coast and all tourist destinations in the region so that quality tourism can be strengthened.

Gábor Papp, mayor of Hévíz (Fidesz-KDNP), recalled that the agreement with Wizz Air shows that German guests are among the most important for the region, and the launch of the new flight will not only increase the number of visitors to the spa, but could also attract younger age groups. The region can cater to all age groups and the airport is in a prime location; its planned development could bring an increase not only in passenger traffic but also in freight, he added.

Wizz Air’s first flight from Dortmund, which operates twice a week until September 15, brought around 170 people to Hungary.
