The European Commission has approved adding Tuzsér apples and Őrség pumpkin seed oil to the register of protected products.
Őrség pumpkin seed oil is an unrefined vegetable oil pressed exclusively from the roasted seeds of pumpkins and grown specifically for this purpose. The dark green oil is free of all other substances and has a nutty taste that is full, silky, and spicy.
The pumpkin seed oil from Őrség won the right to use the Hungarian Traditions-Flavors-Regions (HÍR) trademark in 2014; it also won a silver medal at the 2019 International Squash Seed Oil Exhibition.
Hungary’s Tuzsér apple is now eligible for the protected designation for the Malus domestica apple variety including Gala, Jonagold, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Mutsu, Idared, Jonathan, and Granny Smith. All varieties grown in the defined geographical area are characterized by higher than average hardness, long shelf life and higher than average sugar content.
The eAmbrosia database, which registers geographical indications (GIs) for agricultural and food products, as well as wines and spirits, registered and protected in the European Union, currently contains 3,435 products. There are 25 Hungarian foods, 38 Hungarian wines and 10 Hungarian spirits protected in the European Union.
