Modern Cities Program

The market in Békéscsaba is being developed with HUF 8 billion

Békéscsaba can spend HUF 8.2 billion on the local market as part of the Modern Cities program.

Fidesz Member of Parliament Tamás Herczeg explained at Monday’s press conference that the amount will be received by the Békés County Headquarters from domestic budget sources in four installments between 2020 and 2023.

With the investment, part of the city will be modernized in the heart of Békéscsaba, he said. Herczeg also pointed out that such a large-scale development had never taken place in Békéscsaba. The market is visited by 700-800,000 people a year, so the investment will improve the quality of life of people living in the area by reducing congestion. The project is meant to be a form of urban rehabilitation, Herczeg stressed.

A new market, a three-story parking lot for almost 300 vehicles, and a 6,000 square-meter, partly covered market hall will be built on the site of the current market. The surrounding roads and streets will also be partially renovated, said Anita Sódar, CEO of Békéscsaba City Development Ltd.

Deputy Mayor Miklós Hanó (Fidesz-KDNP) and Tourism Adviser Zoltán Opauszki (Fidesz-KDNP) said that the largest, most attractive market in the Southern Great Plain region will be built and it might also increase the tourist attractiveness of Békéscsaba.

The old market hall of Békéscsaba was recently renovated for HUF 770 million from EU funds.
