Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on Wednesday that the largest-ever Hungarian road construction project in the South Asian region will begin in Sri Lanka. Hungary’s Betonútépítő Zrt. will build two large overpasses near the capital for HUF 20 billion.
The minister said the construction of the two sections near Colombo will contribute to the success of the local highway development program. The project is being implemented with a loan from the Hungarian Eximbank and is expected to be completed by October 2023.
The metal structures needed for the construction are already being manufactured in Nyíregyháza and will be delivered in March this year so that the more complicated work can start in May, the ministry announced.
During his visit to Colombo, Péter Szijjártó will also meet with the Sri Lankan prime minister and the ministers of trade, education, roads and foreign affairs.
