The open EU public procurement procedure of Balatoni Hajózási Zrt. was successfully completed. SAM Shipbuilding and Machinery, a company based in Komárom, has won the tender, BAHART announced.
It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to prepare the license and construction plans, obtain the permits, manufacture the parts, transport the parts to Lake Balaton, and then assemble and hand over the finished vessels.
The two ferries and two catamarans are expected to be completed and put into use in 2022. Delivery will take place at Sió, which will be a major logistical and coordination task.
Funding of EUR 15.9 million (HUF 5.7 billion) will come from the Hungarian Government’s capital increase to BAHART of almost HUF 6.6 billion.
The vessels will have state-of-the-art technical and passenger-service equipment. In addition to the purchase of ferries and catamarans, ports and ferry stations will be renewed in the coming years.
The acquisition is part of the company’s entire modernization process to be completed by 2030.
BAHART aims to renew the Balaton fleet so that passengers can receive a European level of service and initiate a new era of boating on Lake Balaton.
