Student City being built in Budapest

The Student City project will be managed by László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology.

Plans call for a student city to be built for almost 12,000 university students, as well as sports facilities for international events including a 15,000-seat stadium. The reason behind Student City is that Budapest has become an international university center, but one of the obstacles to admitting more foreign students is that the city does not have enough places for them to stay

A total of 23 entries were received for the architectural tender of Student City (Budapest Diákváros Nagyvásártelep) and its surroundings.

The winning designers were selected through an open and transparent competition for almost all the projects managed by Balázs Fürjes, Minister of State for the development of Budapest and the metropolitan agglomeration.

The tender was only open to Hungarian design offices due to COVID-19, said Domonkos Schneller, Deputy Secretary of State of the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Budapest and its metropolitan area.

One project was won by BIVAK studio Kft., a young and internationally recognized Hungarian design firm. It will handle the renovation of what will be the city’s central building, originally designed around 1929-1930 by architect Aladár Münnich and which was famous for being able to cover an area larger than a football field without support. The building has begun to decay in recent decades, similar to other old buildings saved by the government, such as Várkert Bazár, designed by Miklós Ybl, and Ludovika Academy’s main building, designed by Mihály Pollack, he added.

This project further shows that the government feels responsible for the country’s architectural heritage, Schneller explained.

The entire Student City project will be managed by László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology serving in the capacity of government commissioner; he will be responsible for concluding the contracts with the designers.

According to Schneller Domonkos, the government may have plans and a permit by next spring, and construction could begin in the second half of 2022.

China’s Fudan University will be located next to the new Student City.
