Minister of Innovation and Technology László Palkovics said that the tram-train is Hungary’s most innovative railway development that allows passengers to get to the center of another city from the nearest stop to their home. The centers of Hódmezővásárhely and Szeged will now be just 35 minutes apart.
The next tramway may be created between two similarly situated cities, Debrecen and Oradea. The development would also serve national policy, as it would connect Hungarians living on both sides of the border, Palkovics said.
According to János Lázár, Member of Parliament for the region and government commissioner for the project, the launch of the rail tram is a historic moment for the people of Hódmezővásárhely, Szeged and all the inhabitants of the country.
The development will help make Hungary one of the best places in Central Europe, as well as a good place to live in the countryside.
The final timetable for the project will be ready by mid-March. The railway tram will use Stadler’s diesel-electric hybrid CityLink vehicles and be free of charge until mid-April, Lázár said.
