Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, said that the closing Mass of the International Eucharistic Congress, the so-called “Statio Orbis,” is the most solemn event of the Congress. It is customary for the Pope to attend this Mass.
The visit of the Holy Father is a great joy for the archdiocese and the whole episcopal conference, and it can give all of us comfort and hope in these difficult times, Erdő added.
He noted that Pope Francis was also expected to attend the Congress, originally scheduled for September 2020. When the event had to be postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic, President János Áder and the cardinal made sure to invite the head of the church again.
The Congress will now be held in Budapest on September 5–12, 2021. In addition to liturgical events, the program also includes conferences, lectures and concerts.
The Catholic Church usually holds a one-week congress to proclaim and celebrate Jesus Christ in the sacrament of the altar. This will be the second time Hungary hosts the event.
Half a million believers attended the closing Mass of the 34th World Eucharistic Congress held at Budapest’s Heroes’ Square in May 1938.
