New highway from Miskolc leads to Kosice and Oradea

Hungary has become the first country to inaugurate all sections of the Via Carpatia Central European Motorway Corridor in its territory.

Minister of Innovation and Technology László Palkovics said that the recently completed section of the M30 provides high-quality roads along the north-south direction of the country. The international route linking seaports and industrial areas also boosts economic development in Borsod.

The Hungarian government decided in 2020 to establish economic development zones so that historic regions could become economically competitive. The Northeastern Hungary Economic Development Zone aims to develop the counties of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Hajdú-Bihar, Heves, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Nógrád and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg with a cross-border impact.

The strategic vision of the zone is to build on its strengths to become Hungary’s largest industrial knowledge park by 2030, with an economy based on innovation and high added value.

The minister and the government commissioner for the Northeastern Hungary Economic Development Zone said that with the completion of the M25 motorway last year, all cities with county rights are connected to the motorway network in Northeastern Hungary.

Two new road developments in Borsod County were also decided upon at the end of 2020, he added.

Regarding the strategic development of the zone, Palkovics said that the model-changing University of Miskolc has two-and-a-half times more budget funding than before, including for development and salary increases. Now, it will have a science and innovation park focusing on materials sciences, sustainability and logistics. The university will become a major knowledge hub through its involvement in the network of national laboratories and applied research institutes.

The Miskolc Vocational Training Center’s program is being supported by the government with more than HUF 6 billion.
