Hungary is building the most advanced transport infrastructure in the region

The Hungarian government aims to make the most of its geographical location.

Levente Magyar, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, opened the two-day conference of the Association of Hungarian Logistics Service Centers (MLSZKSZ) in Budapest on Thursday, MTI reported. 

At the Eastern European Intermodal Conference, the state secretary said that in the last few years there have been more developments in the field of Hungarian transport infrastructure than the total number since the change of regime. We want to continue this trend, he added.

There is a comprehensive airport development strategy on the government’s table, an important element of which is the expansion of ground-handling elements for air freight; the goal is to make all major Hungarian cities capable of handling such freight, Magyar said.

As a result of the 5–8-year development plan, the country will have four to five more airports instead of the current one, and runways suitable for air-freight traffic will be created in dozens of locations. At the same time, they will develop units for receiving cargo aircraft, which will put air transport in Hungary onto a new playing field, he explained.

The state secretary mentioned that there used to be three highways that reached the borders. Seven more have been built in the past 10 years, and seven more will be handed over in the coming years.

The development of the Budapest-Belgrade line will allow for Eastern goods arriving in Greek ports to be delivered to Western Europe. The planned V4 high-speed rail also opens up new possibilities in rail transport, he added.

The logistics capacity in Záhony will be rebuilt as well, specifically the development of the East-West Gate, which will include a 140-acre terminal with associated units and a 10-kilometer new railway to connect the growing volume of goods coming from the Far East with Europe, he said.
