Vilmos Thummerer’s 2019 vintage Eger Chardonnay Battonage won a gold medal at the Chardonnay World Championship in France.
The Chardonnay du Monde International Wine Competition recognizes the best Chardonnay wines in the world. The competition, held in March, featured 604 wines from 36 countries. The Chardonnay of Thummerer Winery was the only Hungarian to win a gold medal at this prestigious competition.
Chardonnay du Monde has much stricter quality standards than other international competitions and is one of the most prestigious awards, Vilmos Thummerer, founder of the winery, said.
He added: Hungary achieved an outstanding result overall, as it finished fourth with nine medals in the competition, behind France, Switzerland and Canada.
The domestic wine industry really needed this recognition because, after the difficult year behind us, we are hungry for success. I think we can be rightly proud, he added.
The gold-medal wine of Thummerer Winery has a medium intensity and golden yellow appearance. Its aroma is a mix of tropical fruits and juicy grapes with elegant tones of oak and “battonage” spices.
