Central Europe’s biggest sailing race set for 2022

Over the past two decades, Kékszalag has become the largest sailing race in Central Europe.

The Hungarian Sailing Federation will organize the largest sailing race on a lake in Central Europe, the Kékszalag, between July 14 and 16, 2022.

The Hungária Yacht Club of Balatonfüred first organized the competition in 1934. The boat that sailed the fastest clockwise around the 155 kilometers of the lake won the race. Until 1942, the race took place every two years. After missing a few years due to the World War, the tradition was revived in 1947, according to a local newspaper. The winner in 1955, with a time of 10 hours and 40 minutes, was the legendary cruiser Nemere II 75, whose fantastic record was only beaten 57 years later, in 2012.

Over the past two decades, Kékszalag has become the largest sailing race in Central Europe.

There was a year when almost 600 masters set off eastwards from the port of Balatonfüred.

The two-day event also boosts tourism in the region, as family members and friends of the competitors spend the days before and after the event at Lake Balaton. In addition, many foreign and local water sports enthusiasts schedule their holidays at Lake Balaton around the Kékszalag sailing race.
