The 15 representatives unanimously agreed that the Debrecen-based Tervtár Tervező, Kivitelező és Szolgáltató Bt., and MKB Consulting Zrt. should win the public procurement procedure for the design of the Békéscsaba airport for HUF 1.45 billion.
The winning bidder will be required to prepare a feasibility study, as well as licensing and design plans. It should be taken into account that the passenger terminal will have an area of 1,000 square meters, a new runway of 2,500 meters will be built, and the design of the utility and road connections will be part of the project.
The development of Békéscsaba airport has been on the agenda since the signing of the Békéscsaba Modern Cities program in 2016. The government decided to develop the airport at the beginning of December 2020, and HUF 154 million was allocated from the Investment Preparation Fund to prepare for this.
Member of Parliament Tamás Herczeg (Fidesz) said that the preparatory phase could be completed by the end of 2024 and the actual works could start in 2025
Innovation and Technology Minister László Palkovics said during his visit in February 2021 that Békéscsaba and Gyula will become the center of the Hungarian aerospace industry. An airport suitable for cargo and business flights, as well as sports and other activities, should thus be built.
Békés Airport Kft., which operates the Békéscsaba airport, is owned mainly by the Hungarian state and 3.3 percent by the municipality.
