180-year-old Bath Hotel in Esztergom to be renovated

Within the framework of the Kisfaludy program, the project will receive funding of HUF 400 million.

Mayor Ádám Hernádi said that after the completion of the ongoing public procurement, the complete reconstruction of the building will start in the first months of 2021, covering a renewed facade, new doors and windows, and retrofitted walls and utilities.

The Bath Hotel will be restored to its original form, based on plans found in the archives and photographs from the early 1900s. The mayor added that the municipality is also conducting advanced negotiations on how the building will be used once work is complete.

There was once a hot water lake fed by local thermal springs, where Béla III’s wife opened a public bath. The hotel was built in 1842, with the steam rooms and thermal baths behind it. Ferenc Liszt and István Széchenyi visited the spot as well as Lajos Kossuth during his military recruitment tour in 1848.

After having no owner from the second half of the 1990s, the city bought it in 2006 for HUF 130 million. The roof was already renovated in the summer of 2019, as it was in need of preservation.

The reconstruction of the hotel is part of the HUF 5 billion investment package of the Kisfaludy program. The total project includes the renovation of Esztergom’s Adventure Bath and facade of its town hall as well as developments in sports, tourism and health tourism at the Szent István Beach Bath.
